The time has come for me to get a new laptop.

Something light!
Mine weighs 7 kilos and it really hurts to lug it around.
If you want to watch movies on it go for a better processor. If you just wanna save word documents and store images, buy a cheaper one. Mine was really expensive a few years ago (like $4000 AUD) but I've had it this whole time without needing to replace it. So, think about timeframe and practicality!

What is your price range?

In short I personally recommend a MacBook, it is the least hassle computer I have ever used. With your current status as a JET you are eligible for a 10% educational discount. Takes a while to get used to coming from Windows, but there is a lot of stuff you don't have to worry about when using one.

Other than that, I would not recommend getting anything until laptops start shipping with Windows 7 (Windows Vista has been generally been slated and 7 is a big improvement). Waiting till you can get something decent with a Blu-Ray drive may also be a good idea.
